Chapter 9
We retired to my office in order to review what we knew about the case and take next steps. Tyler sat beside me as we stared at the laptop.
“Okay,” Tyler said, “we’ve established that Remmy and Devlin are likely working with a third party. So how do we figure out who that is? And how do we recover the loot? I mean, what if it’s gone already?”
“I’m not too worried about the loot being sold right now, though I have some associates in the black market who are keeping an eye out in case anything shows up. Nothing has, as yet. Right now, I’m working with a detective friend of mine who’s doing some background research into a couple of angles for me. If what I’m thinking is close to being right, then this thing just got ugly, in a family ugly kind of way.
“What do you mean?” Tyler asked.
“I don’t want to say anything yet, just in case I’m wrong. But I don’t think I will be, unfortunately.” I got on the Internet and pulled up Facebook. “I should have done this before, but I need to check Griffin and Remmy’s list of friends more closely, see if there’s anything helpful there.”
“Next time I come over, I’ll bring my laptop so we have two computers at our disposal. You’re wireless, right?” he asked.
“Yup.” I pulled up Remmy’s profile. My phone vibrated on the table. I picked it up and read the caller ID. “Why don’t you look and see if anything rings a bell, or anyone looks familiar? Maybe you’ve seen them at the bar or something. I have to take this.” I jiggled the phone at him.
“Go.”
I walked into the living room. “Hey, Hal. I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon.”
“Yeah, well I thought this was important. My buddy in Chicago, he told me that a man answering the description of Sam Cordone had owned a small safe company for years, until it went bankrupt ten years ago. Shoddy workmanship, lawsuits, the whole nine yards. He changed his name, but it’s definitely the same guy.”
“He have a son, by any chance?” I asked, dread filling my heart.
Hal was silent before asking, “How’d you know?”
“Just tell me.”
I heard papers shuffling in the background. “Okay. He got married when he moved back, but the wife died a year after the child was born. After the bankruptcy, kid became a juvenile delinquent, but his record was cleared when he turned eighteen. Seemed to turn his life around after his dad died.” Or he was plotting his revenge.
Hal was still talking. “Went to night school, took actuarial courses. Moved to—” he paused. “Well, you probably know where he went, don’t you?”
“Yes, I do.”
“So, what’s the angle?” Hal asked.
“I think the kid is trying to bankrupt Forever Safes, to smear the company irrevocably as revenge for what happened to his dad. Though in truth, Sam Cordone or whatever he changed his name to, was unlucky in business, and created bad products.
